Daegu City Hosts the 22nd Universiade
The time-honoured educational and historical city of Daegu will host the Summer Universiade from August 21 to 31, 2003. Sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), students from all over the world will compete in this biennial sporting event. Since the Universiade began in 1959 in Turin, Italy, the event continues to be a premier university sporting event.

The theme for the Daegu Universiade is "Dream for Unity," expressing the desire of humanity to overcome all boundaries and differences and become one in a harmony of nature and modern culture. This Universiade will distinguish itself from previous Universiades by reconsidering the achievements of the past century and the predominance of materialism, and advocate the realization of an environmentally friendly ideology that respects both nature and humanity. This also captures the character of Daegu, which is both the center of Korea's textile industry and a city with the beauty of nature.

Young people from 170 countries around the world will test their skills in 13 different events at this Universiade. The total number of participants, including staff members, athletes and press corps members, is expected to reach about 11,000. The Organizing Committee for the Daegu Universiade is fostering a spirit of participation among ordinary citizens, engaging in a variety of publicity activities to ensure that things go smoothly.

One of these activities is selecting 12 university students as publicity ambassadors and making them eligible to be the Universiade mascot, Dreami. In addition to the selection of publicity ambassadors, regular volunteers to help the event run smoothly are now being enlisted.
